Project Policies for This Year

The Good Design Award 2019 was executed to aim to augment the value of the award and return it to the society, reinforcing "Discover", "Share" and "Innovation" cycle. Below is a summary of the implementation.

New field of entries and Advance of globalization
The field and definition of design are expanding year by year, and there are excellent designs in the field that was not considered as design before.
In addition, the world is changing every day, and new fields of business and enterprise appear. We do our best to collect emerging information and encourage them to join GOOD DESIGN AWARD.
And, with the rapid development in recent years, especially represented by China, which has a large number of applicants, we have actively held GOOD DESIGN AWARD briefing events in China, Taiwan and South Korea, explaining in detail the purpose and screening perspectives of the GOOD DESIGN AWARD.

Establish talent training plan through GOOD DESIGN AWARD
Every year, you can learn the most advanced designs from GOOD DESIGN AWARD winners. It is also a treasure trove of design archives, that have been stored for more than 60 years. These resources will be passed on to students as internship programs through assistant work on the screening process. In 2019, the number of participating universities and faculties, increased to provide more students within GOOD DESIGN AWARD experience.
In addition, we provided a subject to the 57th SENDENKAIGI AWARD for Junior high school students and high school students to call for a catchphrase convey briefly "What is Good Design Award?". We also endeavored to raise the awareness of young people.

GOOD DESIGN EXHIBITION for all the people
GOOD DESIGN EXHIBITION that displays all the award items has become admission free from this year. At the same time, GOOD DESIGN Marunouchi and Tokyo Midtown Design Hub will also hold related events and activities. We are committed to making the participants of the exhibition from winners and design relevant personnel to the general public, and making it easy for them to visit and understand award design.

Message from Chair(April 3, 2019)

Beauty and resonance

We now stand on the brink of many changes. As times change significantly, we ourselves should be the ones shaping the life we lead and our society.
From this starting point of seeking even modest improvements to how things are, what drives real change is the enterprise of design. Treating a project, however small, as an opportunity for good design enables contributors to take a variety of approaches in pursuit of their ideals – imagining a wonderful user experience, considering those involved in development, production, or distribution, and ensuring a reasonable environmental footprint, for example – and make their project a reality.
What is designed through these approaches must be aesthetically satisfying. The beauty of well-designed things emerges as the culmination and refinement of the contributors' outlook, awareness, and experimentation. That is precisely why, when we perceive this beauty, we sense and discover that there is a lot behind it. Not only beautiful, good design also arouses empathy, and this resonance should probably be appreciated as having the power to bring about desirable changes.
How accurately can the award program discern the hopes and intentions behind beautiful design? And can we convey it to a wider audience and draw out its power to resonate with people? Once again this year, along with program participants, we will consider and promote the potential of good design. We look forward to your participation.
