The Good Design ASEAN Design Selection is a two-year joint project undertaken by the ASEAN-Japan Centre and the Japan Institute of Design Promotion in 2017 and 2018.
It was launched with the objective to of sharing the values of "good design " as recognized by the Good Design Award with the fast-growing economies of ASEAN. The initiative also aims to offer suggestions for using design to solve social problems, as well as encouraging Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in ASEAN to enhance their product/service design, develop business proposals that create new values to increase the marketability of ASEAN products in the Japanese market through the better understating of the Japanese design market.
In FY2017, design professionals who are members of the Good Design Award Judging Committee or Good Design Fellows visited the 10 ASEAN Member States to watch presentations by local designers and manufacturers and carry out preliminary selection of designs that met certain quality standards or held out the prospect of future development.
In FY2018, these candidate designs went through the final screening process for the Good Design Award, which resulted in 22 designs receiving the 2018 Good Design ASEAN Design Selection Award.
The awarded designs overturn the conventional image of design in the ASEAN economies as being focused primarily on traditional handicrafts and other craft industries. They offer an insight into new initiatives by young designers, their leading-edge projects, and their intense enthusiasm for solving problems and contributing to society.
