Introduction: What kind of beautiful phenomenon is the product designed to bring?
While making sure that the products are beautifully shaped in light of this year's theme “beauty," we have evaluated each item in Unit 7 for Best 100 and beyond by asking “what kind of beautiful phenomenon is the product designed to bring?" There were 122 awarded items in this unit.
Among the award-winning works, we are starting to see more designs of events and experience made possible by products.
Ultra Short Throw Projector [FUJIFILM PROJECTOR Z5000] (GOOD DESIGN GOLD AWARD)
This projector is unlike any of its predecessors in the sense that the rotating parts enable the projection on virtually any wall in any space from any angle. This allows for a new type of presentation that hasn't been possible before, which is why it was highly praised. While well made as a product, it stresses its experiential aspect, which is one of the factors shared with other products selected for Best 100.
OLED TV [LG SIGNATURE OLED TV R9] (GOOD DESIGN GOLD AWARD)
This product is the first to realize what people have been dreaming of for decades. It has been almost 20 years since the development of OLED displays started, and the possibility of rollable TV had been acknowledged since then. This finally makes that happen with a large display. We were all surprised by the degree of perfection it has achieved, so it was only natural that this product received the Good Design Gold Award.
Interchangeable Lens Mirrorless Camera [SIGMA fp] (GOOD DESIGN GOLD AWARD)
This year marks a major milestone for the digital camera industry, with the introduction of full-sized mirrorless cameras.
Unveiling a brand-new concept, this camera is something that all camera makers have always wanted to create. It keeps the photographing unit to a minimal, allowing the users to add on what they want.
Mount Adapters [MOUNT ADAPTER EF-EOS R SERIES] (GOOD DESIGN BEST100)
This is an adapter that allows SLR camera lenses to be used on mirrorless cameras. Adding new functions that motivate consumers to purchase a mirrorless model is a wonderful idea that makes this product deserve the Best 100 award.
Cinema Lens [SUMIRE PRIME] (GOOD DESIGN BEST100)
This single-focus lens uses new technology to allow old cinematography expressions that were only possible with now-deteriorating vintage lenses. This feature has left a great impression and thus this product was chosen for Best 100.
Summary: Demonstrating how it improves the society helps deliver the message
Even though they did not make it in the Best 100, we found products that were awarded the Good Design Award, such as Mirrorless Camera [EOS R], Digital Camera [Panasonic Digital Camera Lumix S series] and Mirrorless Camera System [Z Mount System], to be all exceptionally well made.
The evaluation process for Best 100 involves both experts and non-experts of the field, so I think the message gets across better if the product demonstrates how it could change the society for the better.
